Have you ever looked around and thought, “Everyone else seems to have it all together… Why am I so behind?”
Maybe it’s when you’re scrolling Instagram and someone’s off on their second Bali holiday this year. Or when a friend casually drops that she just refinanced her home and you’re still figuring out how to cover next month’s bills. Or maybe it’s just a quiet whisper in the back of your mind that says, “You should be further along by now.”
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone, not even close. And I want to tell you something important: you’re probably doing a lot better than you think.
The Secret Struggle No One Talks About
Here’s what I’ve learnt after working with hundreds of Australian women on their money: most of us are carrying silent stories. We feel behind, unsure, overwhelmed – but we rarely say it out loud.
Because shouldn’t we know this stuff already?
Because surely everyone else has it figured out?
Because maybe if we just ignore it a bit longer, it’ll somehow sort itself out?
Let’s be real: money is emotional. It’s tangled up in our self-worth, our upbringing, our choices and our expectations.
And those expectations? They’re often based on a highlight reel, not reality.
So… Why Do We Feel So Behind?
Great question. Here are a few reasons I see come up again and again:
1. We compare our insides to everyone else’s outsides
You know this one – you see the new car, the designer bag, the upgraded kitchen. What you don’t see is the credit card debt, the stress, the skipped savings. It’s not that she’s doing better than you… it’s just that her outside looks different to your inside.
2. We measure success by outdated milestones
Maybe you thought you’d own a home by 30. Or have a certain amount in super by now. Or be debt-free and travelling Europe. But life happens. Careers change. Families grow. Relationships shift. The “timeline” we were sold doesn’t always fit our real life, and you know what, that’s okay.
3. We don’t stop to celebrate how far we’ve come
You paid off a credit card. You stuck to a budget for the first time. You opened that high-interest savings account. These might feel small, but they matter. And when we don’t pause to recognise progress, we start believing we’ve made none.
Let’s Reframe “Behind”
Here’s the truth: You’re not behind. You’re on your path.
Maybe you didn’t learn about money at school.
Maybe no one ever showed you how to manage it with confidence.
Maybe life has thrown a few curveballs your way.
But here you are, reading this. Choosing to grow. Wanting more. And that is powerful.
What If We Asked Different Questions?
Instead of “Why am I so behind?”
Try asking:
💬 What do I want my money to do for me this year?
💬 What’s one small change I can make this week that future me will thank me for?
💬 What does “enough” actually look like for me – not anyone else?
You don’t need a spreadsheet or a finance degree to answer those. Just honesty, a little courage, and maybe a notebook and cup of tea.
