Let’s talk about the voice in your head.
Not the one that reminds you to grab milk or pick up the kids.
I mean that voice, the one that whispers:
“Ugh, you stuffed it again.”
“You’re just not good with money.”
“You’ll never get ahead, what’s the point?”
Sound familiar?
That voice, your inner narrator, is quietly shaping the way you spend, save, earn, and feel about your money.
And most of us never even question it.
What Is Your Inner Narrator?
Your inner narrator is that ongoing commentary in your mind.
It’s made up of beliefs, past experiences, stories you’ve picked up over time, some from childhood, some from society, and some from moments that really hurt.
It’s not always accurate.
It’s not always kind.
But it is always influencing you.
Especially when it comes to money.
The Power of That Voice
Let’s say you grew up hearing things like:
💬 “Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
💬 “We can’t afford that.”
💬 “You have to work hard to earn a living.”
💬 “People like us don’t get rich.”
Those messages don’t just float away, they settle into your subconscious.
So later, when you want to:
- Ask for a pay rise
- Start a side hustle
- Invest for the first time
- Treat yourself to something nice
That inner voice might chime in with fear, doubt or guilt.
Even if the numbers add up.
Even if you’re ready.
Because your brain will always try to keep you “safe”, even if it means staying stuck.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again:
👉 You can have the perfect spreadsheet and still sabotage your savings.
👉 You can be earning six figures and still feel like it’s not enough.
👉 You can get out of debt… and then find yourself back in it.
Why?
Because money isn’t just logical. It’s emotional.
And the voice in your head often drives the decisions you make.
So, What’s Your Inner Narrator Saying?
Let’s get curious – no judgement here.
When you think about money, what phrases pop into your mind?
🧠 “I’ll never have enough.”
🧠 “I’m bad with numbers.”
🧠 “Money is stressful.”
🧠 “I always blow my budget.”
🧠 “If I just ignore it, maybe it’ll be fine.”
Notice them. Write them down. Be honest. These aren’t facts, they’re thoughts.
And you can change them.
How to Shift the Story (Without Faking Positivity)
We’re not talking about toxic positivity here, no pretending everything’s perfect.
We’re talking about building a more supportive internal dialogue. One that helps you move forward, instead of holding you back.
Here’s how to start:
1. Interrupt the pattern
Catch the thought when it happens.
“I’m just not good with money.”
Pause.
Then ask: Is that true – or just familiar?
Awareness is step one.
2. Add “yet” to the end of limiting beliefs
“I’m not good at budgeting… yet.”
“I don’t understand investing… yet.”
“Yet” opens the door to growth.
It reminds your brain: this is a skill you can learn.
3. Choose a new money mantra
No, you don’t have to chant it in the mirror (unless you want to 😉).
But choose a phrase that feels possible, not perfect.
Try one of these:
💛 “I’m learning to feel confident with money.”
💛 “I’m allowed to take up space financially.”
💛 “Every dollar I manage well builds my future.”
💛 “Progress, not perfection.”
Stick it on your mirror, your phone screen, your journal – wherever you’ll see it often.
4. Surround yourself with supportive voices
That means real people, online spaces, and communities (like this one!)
that make you feel seen, inspired, and encouraged.
Because when the world around you says,
“You’ve got this,”
It gets easier to believe it yourself.
Money Confidence Starts Inside
You don’t need to wait until your savings hit a certain number to feel worthy.
You don’t need to have zero debt to start changing your money story.
You don’t need anyone’s permission to feel proud of your progress.
You can start today.
Right now.
With your next thought.
Try This…
For the next 24 hours, tune into your money thoughts.
Don’t judge them. Just notice.
Then ask:
👉 Is this thought helping me or holding me back?
👉 What would I say to a friend who said this?
👉 What’s a kinder, truer version I can try instead?
Tiny shifts. Big ripple effect.
Coming Up Next…
Now that we’ve tackled mindset, it’s time to get practical (in a doable, loving way).
